A Sustainable Farm in Historic Concord

We grow delicious, high-quality produce using conventional and organic growing methods. Sustainably preserving the land and environment for future generations is at the heart of what we do — from working in the fields and managing our facilities to repurposing food and field waste.

Farming Practices

Nurturing fertile, resilient soil is a year-round activity on the farm. To keep the soil healthy and prevent erosion, we use techniques including crop rotation, cover cropping, composting, and reduced tillage.

To prevent weeds, seedlings are started in weed-free compost. After transplanting, we rely on non-chemical controls such as pre-emergence flaming, hand and mechanical weeding, and covered beds for healthy and nutritious produce.

Our approach to pest management centers around Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which involves monitoring activity, introducing beneficial insects, and using targeted, low-impact treatments only when needed.

Conservation is part of daily life on the farm. We’re proud to be certified under Massachusetts’ Commonwealth Quality Program and follow its guidelines for composting, soil care, water quality, and sanitation.

For example, we use our own compost in the fields to enrich the soil and employ water-saving methods such as drip irrigation, black row cover, and optimized watering schedules to reduce water use by up to 50%.

Care for the environment extends beyond the fields. Our farmstand is built almost entirely from recycled wood, with solar panels helping to offset energy use. In the greenhouse, we use radiant heating and an automated insulating cover that closes at sunset or in low light to conserve warmth and protect our seedlings.

Reducing Food Waste

In addition to our composting program, we’ve partnered with organizations like Boston Area Gleaners, Open Table, and Too Good To Go to reduce food waste by redirecting surplus crops and farmstand items to consumers and individuals in our community.

Community Engagement

No trip to Verrill Farm is complete without bumping into a neighbor! We’ve built our reputation as a local favorite through hosting events such as festivals, cooking classes, and farm-to-table dinners. Our annual fundraisers—the Stone Soup Dinner, which supports Concord Agriculture, and the Emerson Harvest Festival, which benefits pediatric care—help strengthen ties to our community.
